Royal Mail Formats & Size & Weight Restrictions Explained.
Each format has its own size,
thickness and weight criteria. The guide below will help
you work out which format your item will fall into based
on Royal Mail's size based pricing. It will help you to
save money on postage by identifying the correct posting
method for your items and obtaining suitable packaging to
protect the items whilst in transit. |
Standard Letter
Greetings cards, CDs in plastic
sleeves (not hard cases), personal letters, postcards and
bills are just a few examples of items that are likely to
fall into the Letter format.
Length: 240mm max
Width: 165mm max
Thickness: 5mm max
Weight: 100g max

Large
Letter
Smaller Items such as gifts, jewellery,
beads, T-shirts, A4 documents, CDs and DVDs in their
cases, certificates, some large greeting cards with badges
and most magazines will fall into the Large Letter format.

Weight: 750g max
Useful Tip - You might consider
folding your A4 document in half to fit into a C5 PiP
envelope. This would bring it down to the Letter format,
as long as it is still less than 5mm thick.

Royal Mail Small Parcels
As of the 2nd of April 2013, Royal Mail introduced Small Parcels which along with Medium Parcels replaces Small Packets .
Maximum dimensions that will qualify as small parcels are;
450mm x 350mm x 80mm
(45cm x 35cm x 8cm)
(17.71" x 13.77" x 3.14")
Maximum weight of 2kg
*There is a rule that allows cube boxes measuring upto 6" x 6" x 6" to still qualify as Small Parcels.*

tapes, large books and other large items and documents are
all examples of items that are likely to fall into the
Packet format.

Weight: over 750g. There is no weight
limit for items
sent First Class. The weight limit for Second Class
items is 1000g.

The maximum length for rolled or
cylindrical items is 900mm, and the length plus twice the
item diameter must be no more than 1040mm.
Longer tubes should be sent by courier or Royal Mail's
Standard Parcels.
